The Technician Level Exam

Requirements to be able to take the technician level examination:

We are assuming that you are not currently attending, or you are not interested in attending an accredited school for ophthalmic assistants.  If you are interested, please call the Joint Commission at 800-284-3937 for more information.  Also, if you are currently certified as an Orthoptist, please call the Joint Commission for more information.

The following requirements are for those going the on-the-job-training route.  The text below in blue type are quoted directly from the Joint Commission website.  My comments are in red.

1. Worked at least 2,000 hours (one year full-time equivalent) as a COA, under ophthalmological supervision.

2. Earn and submit 18 Group A Joint Commission credits within the 24 months prior to applying for the COT examination.
Comment:  It will be convenient to get your CE credits from the modules at eyetec.net while studying for the exam.

3. Maintained certification as a COA while pursuing COT certification.
Note: You must maintain your certification as a COA while fulfilling the criteria for advancement to the COT level. If you attain your COT credential shortly after applying for recertification as a COA, you may be eligible for a partial refund of the recertification fee. Requests for a refund must be received in writing within 60 days of successfully completing the computer-simulated Skill Evaluation. Please contact the Joint Commission Certification Department for more details.
