Target Audience:  OMPs with little or no experience performing fundus photography

 

Pre-requisites:  A basic knowledge of the anatomy of the eye.

Instrumentation
   
 

Description of content:  This section discussed the location and function of the various parts and controls of the fundus camera.

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

 

  • Locate and identify the parts and controls of the fundus camera

  • Discuss the function of each part or control of the fundus camera

   
 

Section 2:

Procedure

   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses a systematic procedure for efficiently and effectively acquiring a good image of the retina.

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

 

  • List the steps necessary to acquire a good image of the retina.

  • Describe the technique for properly aligning the camera .

  • Explain how to regain proper alignment once it is lost.

  • Identify camera settings necessary for proper exposure.

   
 

Section 3:

Troubleshooting

   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses steps necessary to fix specific operational problems with the fundus camera.  Image defects and artifacts are also discussed.

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

 

  • List the steps necessary to troubleshoot specific operational problems with the fundus camera.

  • Identify image defects and artifacts and explain their causes.

   
 

About the Author: Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.    He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
