Target Audience:  Assistant,  technician,  and technologist level personnel needing to review general medical knowledge.

Section 1:

The Nervous System
   
 

Description of content:  This section reviews the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system with emphasis on how it relates to the eye.

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

 

  • Name and describe the primary components of the central nervous system

  • Identify the cranial nerves and name those that affect the eyes

  • Explain how nerve signals travel

  • Recognize common neurological diseases of the optic nerve

   
 

Section 2:

The Respiratory System

   
 

Description of content:  The procedure for neutralizing spherical refractive errors is used to discuss the basic concepts of retinoscopy. 

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

 

  • Identify the components of the upper respiratory tract and describe their function 

  • Identify the components of the lower respiratory tract and describe their function

  • Recognize common respiratory diseases and describe them.

   
 

About the Author: Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.    He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
