Target Audience:  Assistant,  technician,  and technologist level personnel needing to review general medical knowledge.

Section 1:

The Cardiovascular System
   
 

Description of content:  This section reviews the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system with emphasis on how it relates to the eye.

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

 

  • Identify the primary components of the cardiovascular system

  • Describe the pathway of blood flowing through the heart

  • Recognize common diseases of the cardiovascular system

  • Recognize the names of common medications used to treat cardiovascular diseases

   
 

Section 2:

The Endocrine System

   
 

Description of content:  This section reviews the anatomy and physiology of the endocrine system with emphasis on how it relates to the eye.

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

 

  • Identify and describe the function of the glands that make up the endocrine system 

  • Identify the location of the glands that make up the endocrine system.

  • Recognize common diseases of the endocrine system.

  • List the characteristics of Type I and Type II diabetes

  • List the risk factors associated with diabetic retinopathy

   
 

About the Author: Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.    He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
