Module 20:

Handling Glasses Complaints

 

 

The Systematic Evaluation, Solving Specific Problems, and An Ounce of Prevention

 

 

 

OVERVIEW

 

 

 

Estimated study time:  One hour.

 

Program Level:  Intermediate and Advanced 

 

Target Audience:  OMPs wanting a better understanding of what goes wrong with glasses prescriptions and how to resolve the resultant complaints.  OMPs studying for the COT and COMT exams.

 

Pre-requisites:  Modules 17 and 18, or equivalent knowledge, and experience performing refractometry.

Section 1:

The Systematic Evaluation
   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses a checklist of lens characteristics that should be evaluated, including: 

  • prescription confirmation

  • marking the optical centers

  • measuring the base curve

  • measuring the PD

  • checking distance and near vision

  • checking the frame fit

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

  • list the items to be checked in the evaluation process

  • explain the significance of each item on the checklist

   
 

Section 2:

Solving Specific Complaints
   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses the evaluation processes,  possible causes, and possible solutions for specific complaints.  Complaints discussed:

  • distance vision is blurry

  • progressive lenses, any complaint

  • can't read small print

  • has to hold reading too close

  • computer screen complaints

  • can only read with one eye, or closes one eye to read

  • the eyes don't focus at the same distance at near

  • glasses seem too strong

  • distortion, including slanting lines

  • headache, eye soreness, eyestrain

  • double vision when looking straight ahead

  • double vision when looking through lens edge

  • double vision or discomfort only when looking through bifocal

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

  • list common glasses complaints

  • identify a possible cause for a particular complaint

  • identify a possible solution for a particular complaint

 

   
 

Section 3:

An Ounce of Prevention
   
 

Description of content:  This section lists "things to do" and strategies  to avoid problems with glasses prescriptions.

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

  • identify a procedure related to avoiding a particular glasses complaint 

   
 

About the Author: Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.   He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
