Section 1:

Shutter Speed and F-stop
   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses how the camera regulates exposure, including: 

  • Shutter Speed

  • The f-number

  • Depth-of-Field

  • The shutter speed, f-number relationship

  • The Exposure Meter

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

  • discuss how the fundus camera controls exposure

  • calculate changes in exposure due to changes in shutter speed

  • identify the markings on the shutter speed dial

  • discuss the photographic effects of changes in the shutter speed

  • calculate changes in exposure due to changes in f-stop

  • discuss what factors affect depth-of-field

  • calculate changes in the shutter speed, f-number relationship

  • match the camera exposure mode to the camera response

   
 

Section 2:

Flash and Focal Length
   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses factors affecting exposure by electronic flash, , including:

  • Flash power, coverage, and range

  • Flash sychronization

  • Flash Modes

This section also discusses the characteristics of camera lens focal lengths.

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

  • identify factors affecting the effective range of a flash

  • identify what causes the "red eye" reflex

  • discuss how electronic flash exposure is regulated

  • match flash modes with operational characteristics

  • discuss how the lens focal length affects depth-of-field

  • discuss how the lens focal length affects the angle of view

   
 

About the Author: Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.   He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
