Module 23:

Posterior Segment Anatomy and Physiology, Part 1

 

 

 

 

OVERVIEW

 

 

 

Estimated study time:  One hour.

 

Program Level:  Intermediate 

 

Target Audience:  OMPs wanting a better understanding of posterior segment anatomy and physiology.  OMPs studying for the COT and COMT exams.

 

Pre-requisites:  A basic knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology is helpful.

Description of content:  This section discusses posterior segment anatomy and physiology, including: 

  • General anatomy and physiology of the vitreous and retina

  • Abnormalities of the vitreous

  • Anatomy and physiology of the cell layers of the retina

  • Methods of evaluating the vitreous and retina, including color vision testing

Color retina photographs, drawings and animations, and OCT and B-scan images are used for illustration.

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

  • identify characteristics of common vitreous abnormalities

  • identify anatomical features of the posterior segment

  • identify physiological characteristics of the retina and vitreous

  • List common color vision tests

  • List the steps in proper color plate testing

  • identify what functions electrophysiology procedures are designed to test

   
 

About the Author: Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.   He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
