Module 25:

Fluorescein Angiography, Part 1

 

 

 

OVERVIEW

 

 

 

Estimated study time:  One hour.

 

Program Level:  Basic 

 

Target Audience:  OMPs with little or no knowledge of fluorescein angiography, and more experienced OMPs wanting review.

 

Pre-requisites:  Familiarity with retinal anatomy and physiology is helpful.  A basic knowledge of general photography is helpful.

Section 1:

Preparation
   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses preparation for the fluorescein angiography procedure, including: 

  • characteristics of fluorescein dye

  • adverse reactions

  • dye preparation

  • patient preparation

  • the consent form

  • camera set-up

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

  • identify characteristics of sodium fluorescein

  • recognize common adverse reactions to fluorescein angiography

  • explain an appropriate response to a given adverse reaction

  • list steps needed for dye preparation

  • recognize the attributes of a camera system capable of fluorescein angiography

   
 

Section 2:

The Check-list
   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses the steps necessary to insure a successful FA procedure with a film based or a digitally based system. 

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

  • discuss the need for a check-list system of preparation

  • list check-points necessary for a successful film based procedure

  • list check-points necessary for a successful digitally based procedure

   
 

Section 2:

The Injection
   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses setting up and administering a fluorescein injection, including:

  • the procedure

  • extravasation

  • avoiding an arterial injection

  • what if I can't get a vein?

  • oral administration of fluorescein

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

  • list steps needed to inject fluorescein in a vein

  • recognize characteristics of extravasation

  • identify an arterial connection and discuss proper procedure

  • discuss procedure for venapuncture failures

  • discuss FA procedure modification needed for the oral administration of the dye

   
 

About the Authors: 

 

Felix N. Sabates, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.  He has been a practicing retina specialist for many years. 

 

Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.   He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.  He served as co-author for this module.
