Module 27:

Extra-Ocular Muscle Anatomy and Physiology 

 

 

 

 

 

OVERVIEW

 

 

 

Estimated study time:  One hour.

 

Program Level:  Basic and Intermediate 

 

Target Audience:  OMPs with little or no knowledge of EOM anatomy and physiology, OMPs wanting to expand their knowledge, and more experienced OMPs wanting review.

 

Pre-requisites:  Familiarity with basic eye anatomy and physiology is helpful, but not required.

Description of content:   

 

This Module discusses the nine diagnostic positions of gaze, planes of action, and innervation.  The anatomy and physiology of each of the EOMs is discussed and illustrated with graphics and photos.

 

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

  • describe actions related to the EOMs

  • identify which cranial nerve innervates which muscle

  • define terminology related to EOM function

  • name anatomical landmarks related to the EOMs

  • identify the testing position for a particular EOM

   
 

About the Author: Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.   He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
