Target Audience:  OMPs with little or no knowledge of binocular vision, and more experienced OMPs wanting review.

Description of content:  This section discusses components of binocular vision, including: 

  • fusion

  • stereopsis and stereo viewing

  • depth perception

  • abnormal binocularity

  • amblyopia

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

  • identify depth perception clues

  • explain characteristics of stereopsis

  • explain characteristics of ambyopia

  • list types of amblyopia

  • describe common treatments of amblyopia

  • describe proper testing procedures for detecting amblyopia

   
 

Section 2:

Stereo Tests and the

Four Diopter Base-Out Prism Test

   
 

Description of content:  This section describes the function of, and the performance of, stereo perception tests and the four diopter base-out prism test.

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

  • describe what the symbols on a particular stereo test represent

  • describe how to score a stereo test

  • list the proper steps needed to perform a stereo test

  • identify what the four diopter base out prism test measures

  • describe the procedure for performing the four diopter base out prism test

Felix N. Sabates, MD, is Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine. He served as editor and reviewer for this module.
