Target Audience:  OMPs with little or no knowledge of EOM related skills, and more experienced OMPs wanting review.

 

Pre-requisites:  Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the extaocular muscles is helpful.

Section 1:

The Maddox Rod Test and the Von Graefe Technique
   
 

Description of content: This section discusses the objectives of the Maddox Rod Test and the Von Graefe Technique and describes how to perform the tests.

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

  • describe what the patient sees when looking through the Maddox rod

  • identify abbreviations commonly associated with Maddox rod testing

  • identify the correct orientation of the Maddox rod for measuring a given deviation

  • identify the type of deviation present when given the patient response to a particular Maddox rod orientation

  • explain the proper procedure for using the Risley prism with the Maddox rod to quantify a deviation

  • explain how the Von Graefe Technique is set up

  • list what is required of the patient for the Von Graefe Technique to work

  • describe the endpoint of the Von Graefe Technique

   
 

Section 2:

Fusional Vergence Measurements

   
 

Description of content:  This section discusses the objectives of fusional vergence measurements and describes how to perform the measurements.

 

Instructional objectives:  Upon completion of this section,  the student should be able to:

  • define fusional vergence

  • identify the target used for fusional vergence testing

  • list the steps in measuring fusional vergence

  • identify prism orientations used in measuring fusional vergence
