Soft Contact Lenses

Program Level:  Basic and intermediate, with some advanced material.

 

Target Audience:  OMPs wanting to learn about soft contact lenses or to review for the technician level exam.

 

Pre-requisites:  None, although knowledge of basic optics and ocular anatomy is helpful.

Description of content:   

 

This module discusses anterior segment examination, lens types, diameter, base curve, power, fit evaluation, order contact lenses, insertion and removal, initial wearing time, and soft contact lens care.

 

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this module,  the student should be able to:

  • identify key parameter characteristics needed for a good soft contact lens fit

  • determine the starting contact lens power from the glasses prescription

  • identify the significance of the vertex distance adjustment

  • adjust contact lens power from over-refraction results

  • describe how to adjust the fit of a soft contact lens

  • identify and explain typical instructions for the contact lens patient

  • describe characteristics of contact lens care systems

   
 

About the Author: 

 

Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.   He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.
