Module 34:

Soft Contact Lenses

Part 3

Fitting Astigmatism and Fitting Presbyopia

OVERVIEW

Estimated study time:  1/2 hour.

Program Level:  Basic and intermediate, with some advanced material.

Target Audience:  OMPs wanting to learn about soft contact lenses or to review for the technician level exam.

Pre-requisites:  None, although knowledge of basic optics and ocular anatomy is helpful.

Date of original release:  March 7, 2006

Description of content:

This module discusses soft contact lenses for the astigmatic patient and soft contact lenses for the presbyope.  Included are discussions of soft lenses vs. HGP lenses, cylinder sensitivity testing, and fitting soft toric lenses from a trial set.  The presbyopia discussion includes readers, over-plusing,  monovision, and a general discussion of bifocal soft contact lenses.

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this module,  the student should be able to:

  • identify lens designs used to minimize soft toric lens rotation

  • define terminology associated with toric soft contact lens fitting

  • from the refraction, calculate the vertex adjusted starting toric contact lens power

  • calculate an adjusted toric contact lens axis using "LARS".

  • list methods for fitting the presbyopic contact lens patient

  • calculate the lens power for a presbyopic patient who is "over-plused"

  • list techniques used for a successful monovision contact lens fit

  • calculate the starting monovision contact lens power for a particular patient

  • identify soft contact lens bifocal designs

  • define terminology associated with soft contact lens fitting of the presbyope
