The Ciliary Body and the Lens

Target Audience:  OMPs wanting to know more about anterior segment anatomy, physiology and disease processes, or to study for the certifying exams.

Description of content:   

This module discusses the anatomy and physiology of the anterior segment, specifically the ciliary body and the cornea.  Disease processes are discussed.

Instructional  objectives:  Upon completion of  this section,  the student should be able to:

• identify anatomical parts and functions of the ciliary body and the lens

• define terminology related to the ciliary body and the lens

• identify characteristics of the different classifications of cataracts

• discuss the function of instruments used to view and evaluate the lens

• discuss the techniques and steps involved in cataract surgery

• identify terminology associated with laser treatment for a capsular opacity

About the Authors: 

Felix N. Sabates, MD, is former Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.  He has been a practicing ophthalmologist for many years. 

Gary Gallimore is a certified ophthalmic technologist who assists with research at the Eye Foundation of Kansas City and works for a large multi-specialty ophthalmology practice in the metro area of Kansas City.   He has taught CE courses for many years on all subjects of ophthalmic technology.  He served as co-author for this module.
