The Assistant Level Exam Practice Tests and the Technician Level Exam Practice Tests are now available for download in PDF format (what's PDF format?).

From 1997 through 2003 the Practice Tests were sold in book format.  After selling out of seven printings, we are no longer printing the books so that the cost (and the work) could be reduced. So, they are available as PDF files.  This means you will need to print them yourself from the Acrobat viewer.  The Assist books are 75 pages and the Tech books are 85 pages.  More about the books.

How to Order:

The books are only being sold on the website and only with credit card payment through PayPal (what's Paypal?).  Go to the order page to complete the transaction.  Once payment is received, we will send you an e-mail confirmation along with the address to a webpage from which you can download the files (about 1.7MB each).

  More information:

  • Practice for what test?  These are Practice Tests for the written certified ophthalmic assistant exam, and the written certified ophthalmic technician exam. We do not currently have Practice Tests for the technologist exam or the ophthalmic surgical assistant exam.

  • How are the Practice Tests set up?  There is a Practice Test A, and a Practice Test B, for the assistant level exam and the technician level exam. There are over 320 questions on each assistant level Practice Test. There are over 400 questions on each technician level Practice Test.  All content areas for each exam are covered on each test. There are no repeat questions from other tests, although some types of questions are repeated to ensure coverage. You can easily score the tests yourself and get performance data for the entire test and for each content area.

It is helpful for those who are taking the technician level exam to take at least one of the assistant level practice tests because you are expected to know this material and there will be some assistant level material on the technician level certification exam.

  • Why are there two Practice Tests for each level?  Having two tests for each exam level allows you to take one of the tests before you begin your studies. The first test gives you an overall review of your material and you can use the scoring information to pinpoint your weak areas and focus your study time. You can take the second Practice Test later to confirm your level of knowledge, further focus your study time, and review more exam related material.

  • Do the Practice Tests have actual exam questions?  No. We do not have access to the Joint Commission exams, past or current. But we do have over 1400 practice questions presented in the same format as the actual exam. There are just over 200 questions on the actual exam. How many different ways can you ask questions over the same material? The object is to test your knowledge, and we think our Practice Tests cover the material fairly well.

  • How do I know what to study?  The Joint Commission has a list of "content areas" which is basically an outline of what you are supposed to know.  The module material on eyetec.net is all "group A" material, meaning that it is relevant to the content areas and is good exam study material.  This website also has study guides for the exams.

  • How do I know your Practice Tests are any good?   We have not done any scientific studies of the effectiveness of these books, and we don't offer any guarantees.  All we can tell you is that people keep buying them and we see many of their names on the list of people who have passed the exams.  These books have not been revised, so there are some out-of-date questions, typo's, and other errors, but the basic information has not changed.

The feedback from these practice tests has been that the practice tests are more difficult than the actual exam, so don't be too upset if you do not score well on your first attempt at the practice test.  The idea is get you thinking about what you need study, and to give you exam practice and information along the way.
